At Ultra we offer a variety of courses to suit the customers requirements. We offer 3 BORDA Accredited Courses along with some in house certified courses.
Basic Level 4×4 Training – BORDA Certified Courses
At Ultra 4×4 our BORDA Certified Courses are for 2 delegates over a half day or up to 4 delegates over a full day.
This Course is designed to give a basic safety awareness of the potential risks involved when using a 4×4 for driving off road.
Suitable for drivers operating in mild ground conditions with gentle slopes, around 15 degrees and reasonable traction. The course would include the use of the 4×4 transmission systems together with general off-road driving disciplines.
Course Content
- Operator Safety and Environment, vehicle checks, vehicle controls, specialist 4WD controls and associated systems, transmission, braking and vehicle limitations
- Driving observation, risk awareness and assessment, starting, moving off and stopping, emergency stop, mild slopes and securing the vehicle.
- Returning to the road checks
- Assessment feedback and results
Standard Level 4×4 Training – BORDA Certified Courses
Our 4X4 BORDA Certified Courses are for 2 delegates over a full day or 3 delegates over an extended day with pre-registration from BORDA.
This is our most popular course and what we would recommend for most 4×4 drivers at work.
It offers a comprehensive safety awareness of the the potential risks when using a 4×4 when driving off road in typical UK conditions including potentially slippery ground with moderate slopes of around 25 degrees.
Course Content
- Operator Safety and Environment, vehicle checks, vehicle controls, specialist 4WD controls and associated systems, transmission, braking and vehicle limitations.
- Driving observation, risk awareness and assessment, starting, moving off and stopping, emergency stop, mild slopes and securing the vehicle.
- evening – up and down moderate slopes.
- Driving – ditches, ridges and ruts.

Higher Level 4×4 Training – BORDA Certified Courses
The 4X4 BORDA certified courses are for up to 3 delegates over a 2 day period.
The comprehensive course is for drivers who would operate in remote and varied terrain with unknown conditions who are likely to require a high degree of skill. This level confirms competence at the standard level then extends the driver skill to cope with situations up to the vehicle capabilities.
Training on slopes above 25 degrees which prepares drivers to assess and recognise situations beyond the vehicles limits which must be avoided. Also includes disciplines relating specifically to operating on steeper ascents/descents loss of engine breaking, self recovery, changing wheels and driving in darkness. Within this level of course operating with loads and trailers can also be covered.

- Emergency techniques to cover loss of engine breaking and sliding.
- Self recovery.

Ultra 4×4 Adverse Weather Training Non BORDA
ULTRA 4X4 offers a bespoke Adverse weather driving course, which is available all year round, but is particularly popular from the months of September to March.
Our winter driving course is designed to help people become safer, more skilful drivers in adverse weather conditions, which are found in winter.
Course Objectives
- To raise the awareness of any potential risks and hazards your driver/s may face of which they can be exposed to, both on and off road.
- Comply with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations
- Introduce or reinforce a number of techniques which, if implemented correctly, and practiced will create the safest driving environment for your drivers.
- Promote an enjoyable session where “best practice” skills can be developed by discussion, example and practical training.
Driving in poor weather conditions can be difficult and requires a high level of concentration, experience and skill.
It is essential that you should be confident in driving in poor weather, additionally that your car has been checked and it is safe to drive.
Before setting out on any journey where poor weather is forecast it is essential that you listen to local weather reports or check on weather apps or other sources, and whether your journey is essential. We have designed this course in mind of the PEWER regulations of work equipment.
Poor weather conditions include:
- Fog
- Ice and Snow
- Heavy Rain
- Flooding
- Low, Bright Sun
- Gale force winds
- Extreme temperatures
During the training of which includes theory, and driving, our instructors will train your drivers in the following:
- How to prepare your vehicle for your journey
- Planning your journey
- Equipment and essentials (PPE) that you should bring with you
- What to do if you lose control of your 4X4
- Advanced observations, anticipation and planning
The training ratio of this course is 3 participants to one BORDA instructor, and lasts approximately 3 hours. We provide the vehicle, insurance and fuel.
